SCLA Leadership Planning Retreat
We had a great time at the retreat today and i was so glad so many people showed up. I announce the theme for the SCLA Annual Conference: Library 2.0: Taking South Carolina's Libraries to the People. I'll be working on getting some speakers and sections, round tables, and committees of www.scla.org will be working on their conference sessions and workshops throughout the year. Oregon State University releases LibraryFind® software
We are pleased to announce the first public release of the LibraryFind
metasearch software, developed by Oregon State University Libraries.
LibraryFind is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License
(GPL).
This first public release, version 0.7, has a number of advanced features,
such as (but not limited to):
* 2-click user workflow (one click to find, one click to get)
* Integrated OpenURL resolver
* 2-tiered caching system to improve search response time
* Customizable user interface
As this is a pre-1.0 release, there are still a number of features,
functions, and efficiencies we plan to add to the software. We encourage
involvement from others in the library community who are interested in
working on an open source metasearch product.

Podcasting
People have had the ability to put audio content on the Web for over a decade, but not until the term “podcasting” was coined (two years ago) did so many people start taking advantage of this. This can be attributed to both the incredible ease of use of newer recording and syndication tools and the incredible popularity of the iPod and other MP3 players. Go to almost any place where young people congregate and you will see the ubiquitous white iPod earbuds. Podcasting became popular so quickly that, at the end of 2005, podcast was named the Word of the Year by the New Oxford American Dictionary.

Brunching with Authors at the SC Book Festival
The South Carolina Center for the Book, in partnership with the South Carolina Book Festival and Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., announces “Brunching With Authors,” a special literary event on Sunday, February 25th, 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. “Brunching With Authors” will take place at the South Carolina State Museum on 301 Gervais Street in downtown Columbia and will feature a gourmet brunch eaten alongside an author. The winner of the 2007 Palmetto Book Award will also be recognized at this event.Author guests at “Brunching With Authors” come from a wide variety of literary backgrounds, including mystery, cookbooks, children’s literature, poetry, nonfiction, and general fiction. The guest list includes Jack Bass, James O. Born, Sonny Brewer, C. Michael Curtis, Elizabeth Cox, Nathalie Dupree, Karin Gillespie, Michele Martinez, Clarence Nero, Margot Theis Raven, George Singleton, Mark Turcotte, and Marjory Wentworth. Searching the Information Highways & Byways Classes for Information Seekers - Spring 2007
The staff of the South Carolina State Library presents a series of classes to assist state agency employees with finding information. The classes will give overviews and tips on specific topics related to online searching and to services available at the State Library.Since enrollment is limited to 17 people per session, we recommend that you register early. You will receive an official confirmation of registration by email. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact Amanda Stone at (803) 734-4816 or astone@statelibrary.sc.gov to confirm your registration.All scheduled classes will be held at the South Carolina State Library, 1500 Senate Street. Limited visitor parking is available in the lot behind the Library. Metered parking is also available on the streets surrounding the library. Parking meters cost about $1.50 for two hours (quarters only). A map and driving directions to the library are available.
